Worcester Mayoral Election January 1462

Postby site_ml » Thu Jan 30, 2014 6:41 am

Greetings,

I have submitted my name as mayor candidate a few days ago, and have now formulated some plans as to what to do during my term.

Before I get into the outline on my plans, first and foremost, I would like to mention that I have extensive experience in the past to aid me in this endeavor. Yes, it's true I have not been Mayor for 4 years now and things have surely changed considerably, but I have been mayor for 10 terms total past that time, and that, I'd say, is at least somewhat impressive in the time frame I was active. I have also served 6 terms on Council of Worcester, which also grants me the sought after perspective of all relevant levels of government concerned that affect us directly, aside from the King. Even if things have changed considerably as far as rules go, I know people haven't, nor has the hierarchy or positions on Council (even if new things were added) - I will easily find familiarity within it all. What does this mean for you? I can skip the administrative jumble of tasks straight to the heart of issues concerning our fine City!

My plans are fairly simple:

Short version

(Re)start Fish and Donation lotteries and raise activity level, improve town treasury, trade our fish for wood, deal with 3d town setup, and be open in my operations.

Long version

1) I intend to reinstate two of our prized lotteries, the Fish Lottery (which has seen on and off implementations for years back, even back to times of when I was Mayor), and a somewhat newer, Donation Lottery. I am still working out the kinks to bring us the most exhilarating and beneficial system so far, so please bear with me, but I am confident I can work out the best way to make people happy and trade restarted so that the City benefits the most. It seems we have been hurting for wood, and the best way to alleviate that is if we have fish to put up to trade and get the wood we need. I have a business partner in Derby who has been helping me in getting things going on this front, too, over the past month, but I hope to expand the effort one way or another. We simply need wood to get bread, carpentry and blacksmithy going so that we are not short on supplies that would keep us thriving and we shouldn't have to send our own citizens to chop wood when they could instead fish! With all this considered, the two lotteries are my priority number one.

2) My second priority will be gauging taxes. I will be polling the County for tribute information, as well as figuring out the daily balance to see what coffer expansion the TH may need, and act accordingly. Yes, expect the first tax to be on the excessive side, and I will apologize for it beforehand, but unless the TH treasury is sufficient, my plans will be largely impeded. The second tax I levy should be thus more balanced and even low in comparison if all goes well. It all depends on what I have to work with, and that, in turn, depends on what the state of the TH currently is.

3) We are at war, I understand this, but until the war effort hits home in the County of Mercia, and, especially specifically here in Worcester, I intend to run business as usual practices. There really is no reason for us to cower to the mere possibility of foul happenings impeding us in the future, rather than crossing that bridge when we get to it. Therefore, unless we have armies at our doorstep, I will not be handing out safety grants to trusted or random people to spare the goods and treasury from the invaders. Rash actions is not my department, usually.

4) Believe it or not, I'm keeping an eye out on the 3d layout of our town as we speak. I've been graciously made the town planner by our current Mayor, Yunno, and have been trying to clean things up from the past. If you are planning to move your house, please make sure you have your fields next to it - I usually try and make sure that it's possible to have a 2x2 house next to your 2 fields. If you don't have the slots at the spot you're concerned with, please mail me and I can alleviate your issue promptly. I will likely appoint my own town layout planner for this purpose, so that I am not left handling this alone. I have taken care to make space available where you can place your fields next to your house in normal circumstances. If you have taken a spot in a 2x2 area that's occupied by someone else, please move. It will make everyone's lives easier, and my job at planning the town layout that much easier. When in doubt, please mail me before placing down your fields especially! Placing down your house is much easier corrected than placing your fields (As of this writing moving fields is still impossible).

5) Transparency. I intend to be open as to what is going on in my office and why. Openness fosters involvement and asking tough questions when need be, and I welcome those.

6) Activity. Let's face it, our new citizen retention is horrible. We need to step up to the plate, and start drumming up activity, first step being filling taverns to the brim whenever possible.

Thus I am starting a new journey if you allow it, let's hope it is a good one! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to voice them now.

Why, it seems I like to be pestered, so I'll answer with joy :)

I'd like to ask why raise the first tax to begin with? Regardless of the TH inventory, it shouldn't need to be done, it will just give you wiggle room really (unless of course, the TH is empty). Why not first try and ask for donations, which I have easily gotten in the past, before taxes? It took a good amount of time to get the taxes down to where they currently are, we wouldn't want to upset people by hiking them up.

Once I take office, I will take inventory of what I have at my disposal, compare that to the up front costs of putting forward my ideas to jump-starting fishing, making direct cash inflow and trading as well as what (if any) Tribute the County will expect of the Town, and then tally that up with what is actually available to me, as well as look at what the trend in treasury gain/loss is. The difference I will need to supplement with taxes, sadly, or otherwise scrap or handicap whatever plans I draw up. I've upset people before, and I'm not afraid to do it again if it means things will get done and the town back on track to prosperity. I'm tapping minds as we speak to pool the best ideas together (I will post soon in the Town Council room, too, since I already have access there). Best case scenario is, this whole paragraph will have been just a scare that nothing came out of, and that we have sufficient resources to continue - I am always preparing for the worst, however.

I would like to ask if you are seeking on having someone else fill this position while you are in the Mayor's seat. Also, I read somewhere (on the login notification, I actually can't remember if it was part of the 'updated' or 'coming soon' section) That the Town Hall tavern's can now be moved. If so, why hasn't ours already been moved towards the Town Center? Last I saw it was still down where the default center was due to a glitch that placed it.

That's the kicker: If it can be moved, I was not told about it. I own a tavern myself, and I *have* moved that one, if I remember correctly. I do not have access to moving the TH tavern, however, and that, I suspect, can only be done by the Mayor through the appropriate facility in the Town Hall - the same one for restocking and managing the TH Tavern. As far as having a town planner, it will probably be just to have someone else able to handle it should I become too busy to do this myself.

I might need someone else to verify this, but I am almost 99.9% certain goods and money can now be stolen out of grants, creating them essentially useless for protection purposes.

You are correct in your statement. However, I define "safety grant" a little differently. The grants are to be used as a direct means of transferring goods and cash to trusted citizens and returned when danger passes, and thus a safety from being taken away should the invaders actually succeed in taking us down and demand that grants issued by TH be returned.

I hope this answers your questions! Next! ;)
