I've been thinking about the location quite a bit and in my head I am tending to lean towards a setting where it is a "new world" so that we are able to shape its creation or one that is loosely based on Earth so that while the general shape is decided we can still tweak it and alter some aspects of landscape.

With my ideas however it does tend to play a little havoc with a fixed time setting based on RL time so for that I would suggest something like having the world based on ours but with some changes e.g Set in a medieval time period but not with nations as we know them.

We could always say that a lot of things that were supposed to happen to create England did not, and then what ensued was a division of the land into small county-states, with each county having its own king. Better yet, as the game starts out, we can say all the areas but area XYZ got wiped due to some disease spreading like wildfire - and that makes it possible to do an almost clean start, while keeping some medieval concepts and RL-History-ish restriction and allowing to truly let imagination loose to create a realistic world. It also takes care of those who think "oh, it's a made up world, so let's do magic!" - since this is supposed to be simply an alternative story to RL. I wouldn't mind using RL maps to restrict possibilities - though I suppose natural resources' location could always be tweaked somewhat - I'm not looking for de facto recreation of England, just a likeness enough :P

Running with the disease idea we could say that the disease wiped out large swathes of the population, hence the reason there are only a few towns etc left.

As for the "Alternate history" thing was can say that its Earth and have the maps loosely based on RL but say things like landmasses formed a little differently blah blah blah. That allows us to position the likes of resources, both mineral and material, where we think they are best suited.

That works, imho, and it's just about what I had in mind, though I was thinking we could simply imply that such different formation took place.

We don't even have to imply I don't think. If people ask Admins about the basis we can explain but for the most part we can just say "This is the world, this is what happened, Knock yourselves out."
