Lonely Suffering

I’ve suffered much through life,
But that doesn’t make me proud –
The worst torture I experienced while
Being lonely in the midst of a crowd.

I hear the chatter of the lot around,
But as if from great distance,
As toward me never comes a sound
That would speak near and with sense.
